About The Boston Beer Company
Our culture is a product from Jim Koch?s earliest days as our Founder and Brewer. He wanted to build a company where he would be happy working. We are committed to maintaining a culture that celebrates beer with a passion and knowledge that?s contagious. As Jim says, ?If you can?t have fun in the beer business, something?s wrong.?
When Jim Koch started The Boston Beer Company in 1984, he described himself as CEO ? Chief Everything Officer. He did everything from brewing and selling the beer to delivering it to the bars and restaurants that were our first accounts. Signs announcing the arrival of Samuel Adams Boston Lager were hand made on poster board, budgets were tight, but Jim?s priority was clear: always put quality first and do what?s best for the beer. To this day, our mantra is: ?The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing?. And the ?main thing? is brewing and selling the best beers on the planet.
Today, we are a company of over 1,400 people. We have grown to be America?s leading craft brewer, and yet we have just over 1% of the U.S. beer market. As we grow, we work hard to keep the strong culture of a small entrepreneurial business. No matter where the members of our Boston Beer family come from, we?re all here for the same reason: For the Love of Beer.
We take the beer seriously, but not ourselves. Every new employee at Boston Beer starts in an orientation program that includes company history, selling skills, beer education, and an extensive beer tasting with Jim. Training and beer education courses continue after orientation ? we?re proud to have the largest number of Certified Cicerones? (aka beer geeks) in the industry! Everyone in the company is also encouraged to homebrew for our annual employee Longshot Homebrew competition. Additionally, our Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream program enables us to share our passion and expertise and give back to small business owners in the industry.
Beer should be fun ? and at the end of any given day we get to meet up with our colleagues and our drinkers over a beer. What could be better?!
