Role Purpose:

The Brewing Supervisor is responsible for overseeing day-to-day brewing operations, managing a team of brewers, and ensuring the efficient production of high-quality products. This role requires strong leadership abilities, technical expertise in brewing, and a commitment to excellence in all aspects of production. This position will be a front-line leader in the brewery.

Accountabilities & Impact:

Safety:
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and guidelines and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
  • Conduct regular safety training sessions and promote a culture of safety awareness among brewing team members.
  • Investigate and report any safety incidents or near misses and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Quality/Food Safety:
  • Ensure compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and quality assurance procedures to maintain product integrity and meet customer expectations.
  • Implement quality control measures to monitor raw materials, intermediate products, and finished goods for adherence to specifications.
  • Conduct sensory evaluations and analytical tests to assess product quality and identify areas for improvement.
  • Collaborate with the Quality team to address any quality issues and implement corrective actions as needed.

Brewing Operations:
  • Supervise all aspects of the brewing process, including kitting, batching, laboratory work, filtration, raw material unloading, control room operations, and inventory.
  • Utilize understanding of Fermentation science to monitor fermenter efficiency and movement.
  • Ensure adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and production schedules to meet production targets and customer demand.
  • Monitor brewing process parameters such as ABV, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), CO2 concentration, Real Extract (RE), and more, to maintain product quality and consistency.

Team Management:
  • Lead, coach, and mentor a team of brewers, providing guidance, training, and support to ensure high performance and job satisfaction.
  • Delegate tasks and responsibilities effectively to maximize productivity and efficiency within the brewing department.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback to team members to facilitate professional growth and development.
  • Assist in shift scheduling and ensure proper staffing to meet production demands. Communicate scheduling changes and adjustments to team members.
  • Manage team members time and attendance, including schedules, timecards approval, time-off approval, and adherence to No-Fault Attendance Policy.
  • Hold one-on-one accountability discussions with team members to review their performance, discuss areas for improvement, and set goals for continued development.

Inventory Management:
  • Monitor inventory levels of brewing materials, including yeast, and additives, and coordinate with procurement and logistics teams to ensure timely replenishment.
  • Manage inventory accuracy and integrity through regular cycle counts and reconciliation processes.

Continuous Improvement:
  • Identify opportunities for process optimization, cost reduction, and quality improvement within the brewing department.
  • Lead and participate in continuous improvement initiatives, including lean manufacturing projects, to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Drive root cause/corrective action ensuring all measurables are achieved consistently.

Collaboration:
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Packaging, Maintenance, Quality, and Supply Chain, to achieve production goals and resolve issues.
  • Communicate effectively with other departments to ensure alignment on production schedules, inventory management, and product specifications.

Skills & Experiences Needed:
  • Associate degree and/or equivalent experience, Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of supervisory / leadership experience in manufacturing environment.
  • Brewing certifications - preferred.
  • Previous Brewing or high-speed food/beverage manufacturing experience.
  • Must be proficient in the use of computer and software skills such as MS Office, Teams, and email. Excel - intermediate.
  • Proven ability to implement and maintain a management system.
  • Lean Six Sigma or similar program experience - preferred.

Working conditions:
  • Fast-paced and constantly changing work environment.
  • Subject to extreme temperatures.
  • Shift work including days, evenings, overnight shifts, and up to 12 hrs.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand/move 8-12 hours per day.
  • Ability to ascend/descend stairs/ladders throughout shift.
  • Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including (but not limited to) bump cap, safety steel toe shoes, safety glasses, dust masks or PAPRs.
  • Must adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
