Principal Network Engineer

Overview

The Principal Network Engineer is responsible for the planning, design, configuration, implementation, testing and transition to steady state support of the Network. They will partner with peer engineering teams and INFOSEC organization, on network security best practices, process, standards, and configuration management. The Principal Network Engineer evaluates vendor supplied hardware, components, and software packages for fit and performance and makes recommendations to IT management. The Engineer maintains technical documentation for the network architecture and standards. The Engineer will evaluate and maintain network infrastructure to minimize risk and maximize performance and stability. They will contribute to the compiling and presentation of data showing the strengths, weaknesses, risks, and areas of improvement. The role is responsible for evaluating data and delivering solutions that are stable, secure, scalable, and cost effective, as well providing escalation support and incident response.

Specialized Skills and Technologies

  • Experience with Cisco Networking, Firewalls, VoIP, TDM Gateways, SIP, CUBEs, UC Platforms 10.X and up, CUCM, CUC, PCCE, Expressway, 3rd Party VoIP applications via GUI and CLI interfaces 
  • Master Level Experience in: 
    • Cisco Networking & VoIP 
    • Network/Voice Cloud technologies
    • Firewall Technologies
    • Knowledge of OSPF, IGRP, EIGRP, BGP’s basic components, VLAN’s and  
    • Multi-layer switching 
  • CCDP or CCNP equivalent Required 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide coaching and mentorship of team members and peers
  • Make recommendations to enhance processes, procedures and policies relating to engineering function
  • Act as an escalation point to team members when manager is not available
  • Operates as an escalation point to the administration function prior to engaging vendor for support and resolutions
  • Define standards
  • Develop a roadmap of opportunities to simplify and standardize
  • Proactively monitor performance and health and optimize as appropriate
  • Prototype designs and tune to improve performance
  • Lead regular interactions with technical, applications and operational staff to ensure network integrity and security
  • Coordinate maintenance activities across the team
  • Serve as a project leader
  • Research, evaluate and recommend software and hardware products
  • Design and implement architecturally compliant system landscapes
  • Make recommendations to enhance processes, procedures and policies relating to systems functioning and performance
  • Develop, modify, test, implement, document and maintain systems software and hardware
  • Modify and/or debug vendor-supplied utilities and packages
  • Troubleshoot and resolve server, operating system, and other infrastructure problems
  • Monitor systems capacity and performance and provide Tier 2 technical support
  • Stay up-to-date on servers, operating systems, and related technology
  • Serve as a technical resource for infrastructure activities
  • Coach, mentor and develop others
  • Identifies opportunities to redesign or automate business processes and functions to achieve better business results
  • Optimize the process of install, refresh and service packs to improve delivery time to the business
  • Proactively identify opportunities to minimize downtime specific to maintenance windows
  • Develop and maintain a strategy to modernize the landscape while limiting downtime, ensuring the environment is scalable, highly available and responsive
  • Design and implement an optimal configuration to maximize system performance and availability
  • Coordinates activities across the team
  • Identifies and creates opportunities to redesign or automate network processes as it relates to business processes and functions to achieve better business results
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with key Business Unit personnel
  • Provide leadership and knowledge across the team to promote team dynamics
  • Define the strategy of new appropriate technologies, products and techniques that could meet future technology needs
  • Demonstrated capabilities in optimizing storage utilization and performance of large enterprise
  • Develops, implements, and maintain standards, practices, procedures, and controls to maximize efficiencies and compatibility and to ensure data integrity, security, and legal and regulatory compliance
  • Defines and documents configuration, management processes, standards, and best practices
  • Define and negotiate service level agreements for operations
  • Partner with the security and administration teams to establish an effective patching, upgrade, and maintenance program
  • Partner with the security teams to harden infrastructure systems and monitor for malware
  • Develop and maintain SOPs & playbooks to support operations
  • Maintain effective communications with vendors, peers and clients in support of assigned projects

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Information Technology field
  • 9+ years of work experience in a senior Infrastructure engineering role

  • Master level design and solutioning capabilities to optimize security configurations for Internal and External Audit processes and controls including Segregation of Duties implementation
  • Mastery within the appropriate engineering capacity and resource planning, assess risks, and recommend, design and implement plans, troubleshoot to identify and correct malfunctions and help solve multi-faceted problems, security systems, applications, procedures, and techniques
  • Master knowledge of third party integration tools as it relates to security
  • Master level expertise in storage solutions troubleshooting.
  • Mastery level experience in telecommunications and networking environments, security, storage, server and other technologies that match SGWS’s infrastructure landscape
  • Ability to research, evaluate and recommend software and hardware products

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possess expert level industry certification(s)
  • 9+ years of mastery level experience in Infrastructure engineering role as it relates to the hardware and software components that align to technologies supported at Southern Glazers
  • Mastery experience to create, read, analyze, and interpret technical diagrams and written procedures
  • Mastery ability to arrange processes or data in order of patterns specific to policies, processes, or system requirements
  • Mastery level expertise to analyze, solve problems, think outside of the box, and grasp technical concepts
  • Mastery level ability to combine information or data to find relationships among seemingly unrelated events
  • Provide accurate and timely updates to work tickets, incidents, and outages
  • Proven experience in managing small teams demonstrating successful delivery

Physical Demands

  • Physical demands include a considerable amount of time sitting and typing/keyboarding, using a computer (e.g., keyboard, mouse, and monitor), or adding machine
  • Physical demands with activity or condition may include walking, bending, reaching, standing, squatting, and stooping
  • May require occasional lifting/lowering, pushing, carrying, or pulling up to 20lbs
