About The Position
The Director of Supply Chain and Operations (DSC+O) will play a critical role in developing a secure and comprehensive roadmap toward rapid and sustainable scale. This individual must be comfortable working in a high-growth and dynamic environment that requires adaptability, creative thinking, and the enjoyment of opportunistic challenges. This role will work directly with the CEO and may, at times, report to the Board of Directors on key metrics and initiatives outlined as growth priorities.
The right candidate will have had experience in a senior operations or management role in a previous organization in Natural Foods, preferably in baked goods. This person will have expertise in: supply chain management, operating infrastructure, and strategic planning, as well as goals management and information organization. The candidate must understand operational cost drivers that help improve overall business performance.
This person is detail-oriented, drives efficient ways of working through process, and aligns cross departmentally.
The Director of Supply Chain and Operations will have the following primary responsibilities:
The DSC+O will manage all aspects of the relationships with existing Co-Packers and will manage a team of Operation Associates in the execution of production and inventory management. They will be required to vet additional co-packing facilities, forecast production planning based on demand planning, anticipate growth signals, manage all incoming purchase orders, and direct all aspects of operations as they relate to the manufacturing and delivery of all brand products. A strong knowledge of co-manufacturers and a “rolodex of contacts” will be required.
Supply Chain and Planned Demand Management
The DSC+O will be responsible for overseeing the systems for procuring ingredients, as well as managing all supplier relationships, including securing contracts with raw ingredient and packaging suppliers as needed. The DSC+O will be required to thoroughly understand the brand promise as it relates to ingredient integrity and sustainability and so vet suppliers accordingly. Candidates should be very familiar with certification protocols for GFCO, FoodChain ID, Kosher, Vegan, and Purity. They should also understand what to look for in creating a secure and values-driven supply chain infrastructure, including social conditions of workers and environmental impact, among others.
COGS and Production Scale
The DSC+O will be directly responsible for overseeing Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) and will be required to set and meet COGS reduction and margin improvement goals on a quarterly and annual basis. Additionally, the DSC+O will be responsible for creating and implementing a growth strategy to support rapid growth (150%+) YOY, minimizing risk for OTIF rates with customers. This includes securing sustainable supplier relationships and anticipating threats in supply chain and growth objectives. This is especially critical in today’s post-covid supply chain environment.
Annual Financial Objectives and Business Plan
High growth means plans can shift frequently and all team members must be both flexible and resilient. Every action of the DSC+O will directly affect, in real time, the trajectory and successes or failures of the organization. The DSC+O must thrive in that environment. Accordingly, they must participate in quarterly and annual business planning, and be comfortable adapting as the business grows. The DSC+O must be proficient in creating, reading, and navigating Financial Statements and they must be able to execute and report on plans articulately.
The DSC+O should be aware of the general management of all multi-departmental systems of operations, including S&OP, ensuring that the organization is communicating and operating in the most efficient way possible. Examples include, but are not limited to, working with Sales & Marketing on forecast management systems, and onboarding web development initiatives with Marketing. Clear communication skills will be required to instill trust in leadership across these departments. The DSC+O will directly contribute to the success and morale of our entire team.
- 3+ years of experience leading an operations function, preferably in consumer goods or natural foods
- 3+ years of experience working in supply chain
- Strong financial acumen, especially as it relates to the analysis and improvement of COGS/Gross Margin
- Experience in inventory management system, Wherefour a plus
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Sheets, Docs, Slides, and Drive
- Proficient in various PM tools, and experienced in the implementation thereof
