As a Research Scientist in Viticulture you will manage and support novel research projects with the objective of improving wine grape production efficiency while optimizing fruit quality. To fulfil this goal, you will develop and deploy tools in precision viticulture, variable rate management, mechanization and automation. You will help catalyze next generation innovations in vineyard design, training and trellising, pruning, irrigation, nutrition, canopy management and crop load management.

What You Will Do

Project Execution:
  • Independently design and setup field research studies
  • Oversee data collection, analyze and interpret results
  • Maintain a safe laboratory and field work environment
  • Continuously improve and develop technical skills

Collaborate Cross-Functionally:
  • Train interns and technical personnel in field and laboratory procedures
  • Develop mutually beneficial collaborations with partners inside and outside Gallo
  • Mentor and develop new employees and potential talent

Knowledge Communication:
  • Report on the status of research projects through oral and written communications
  • Write or present technical reports for a broad audience including growers, managers and scientists
  • Demonstrate research results in field trials

What You Need
  • High school diploma or State-issued equivalency certificate
  • Ph.D. degree in Agronomy, Agricultural Engineering, Plant Science, Plant Physiology, Forestry, Viticulture, Horticulture, Soil Science, Natural Resources, Geography, Plant Biochemistry, or Biology, plus 2 years of research work experience OR Master of Science degree in Agronomy, Agricultural Engineering, Plant Science, Plant Physiology, Forestry, Viticulture, Horticulture, Soil Science, Natural Resources, Geography, Chemistry, Plant Biochemistry, or Biology plus 4 years of research work experience OR Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy, Agricultural Engineering, Plant Science, Plant Physiology, Forestry, Viticulture, Horticulture, Soil Science, Natural Resources, Geography, Chemistry, Plant Biochemistry, or Biology plus 6 years of research work experience
  • Required to possess specific vision abilities (color vision)

What Will Set You Apart
  • Ph.D. degree in Agronomy, Agricultural Engineering, Plant Science, Forestry, Horticulture, Soil Science, Natural Resources, Geography, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Biology plus 4 years of relevant grape and wine research experience with a demonstrated record of achievement and innovation in agricultural technology
  • Strong record of high technical achievement as evidenced by publication in high-impact scientific journals and the proven ability to conduct creative, independent research within a team environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of commercial grape growing and winemaking practices
