About The Position
Downeast Cider:

Downeast Cider is the #1 hard cider brand in New England and #2 hard cider in the country. Our first batches of unfiltered cider were fermented in the dorms of Bates College, Maine. We're now a team of 100, with new roles opening across all departments.
We produce, package, and ship our products at the cider house in East Boston, which is also the location of our office, taproom, and seasonal outdoor bar.

Director of Quality and R&D:

We’re looking for our next Director of Quality and R&D to manage our lab and a team of 3-4 technicians. This person will have a deep understanding of microbiology, a demonstrated ability to lead QA/QC initiatives, and the experience to train and develop their team. The Director of Quality and R&D reports directly to the VP of Operations. 

  • Ensure quality standards in the cider house from the receivership of raw materials through to the packaging of the final product
  • Train and manage a team of 3-4 Lab Technicians with a large picture focus on the management and continued development of the Quality team and program as a whole
  • Own final responsibility for the quality of all products and processes, including SOPs, training, GMPs, inprocess testing, microbiology, and packaging
  • Oversee R&D product development and collaborate with the marketing team on innovation of new products
  • Responsible for calibration, training and maintenance of lab instruments and equipment
  • Be a resource for quality information, regulatory (FDA/TTB), microbiology and other scientific information and GMPs.
  • At least 2 of years of experience managing a Quality Laboratory
  • At least 2 years of experience managing a team
  • Bachelor's degree in food science, chemistry, biology, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Deep understanding of food microbiology
  • Experience in food safety and regulatory
  • Experience in developing new products, sensory and shelf life testing
  • Ability to work in cross functional teams
  • Analytical and problem solving skills
  • Knowledge in fermentation
  • Experience in the alcohol industry preferred
