The Senior Scientist, Formulation Development is responsible for developing robust products and processes for the Cresco network, from proof of concept through commercial launch, as part of the Technical Services team.

  • Product Development
    • Create product development plans appropriate for each stage of development that achieve overall product development goals
    • Conduct pre-formulation/formulation studies including solubility, excipient compatibility, accelerated stability, physical characterization, and proof of concept batches
    • Assist in scale-up procedures for commercial launch and lead technology transfers across the Cresco network
    • Participate in the writing of protocols, development reports, and manufacturing batch records for development batches
    • Research, assess, and utilize low solubility and controlled release technologies to increase bio-availability of cannabinoids
    • Lead and participate in risk assessments and problem solving for formulations, equipment and processes
    • Partner with Engineering to recommend and on-board new manufacturing technologies required to achieve development objective
    • Participate in due diligence related to licensing technologies or qualifying 3rd party vendors supporting development
    • Troubleshoot product/process issues and lead investigations related to product quality issues
    • Document development work completely and contemporaneously to support patent applications
  • Project Leadership
    • Act as technical lead in cross-functional new product development teams
    • Manage projects, set objectives and report on performance to leadership
    • Participate in periodic product reviews
    • Work closely with Extraction, Manufacturing, Analytical Testing, and Packaging teams to resolve issues when they arise
  • Scientific Leadership
    • Maintain expert knowledge of equipment, instrumentation, and procedures related to cannabis production and development
    • Keep current with scientific literature and industry trends and new innovations relating to product and process technologies
    • Lead improvement projects related to formulation and product development processes
    • Provide expertise and training to other formulators and members of Process Technology and Scale up team
    • Write articles for publication and external presentations

  • MS or PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or PharmacyOR B.S. with relevant industry experience
  • Experience working across a broad range of oral solid and non-sterile liquid dosage forms and manufacturing technologies in the cannabis or pharmaceutical industry
  • Experience with low solubility and controlled release technologies preferred
  • Proficient in MS Office, Highly Proficient in MS Excel

  • Reports to SVP of Manufacturing and Technical Services
  • Empowered to work directly with site-based resources to resolve issues and make decisions related to technical services
  • Works directly with above site functions (i.e. Sales, Engineering, Operations)
  • Works directly with vendors to resolve issues
