This position will report to the Vice President, Beam Suntory Global R&D. This role will work with cross-functional partners in the creation of innovative consumer and customer driven new technologies/platforms, quality improvements and cost savings, to drive Beam Suntory profitable growth and business success. This is a technical leadership position providing broad exposure to operations, marketing/business teams,finance,and sourcing, specifically leading the long-term research arm of R&D with Beam Suntory through internal technical pipelines and both private & public external partnerships.

  • The Senior Manager - Applied Technical Research role is a key leader related to technical innovation, optimization,quality and production of Beam Suntory'sGlobalportfolio, and requires broad exposure and partnership to operations, marketing/business teams, finance, sourcing and other internal and external partners.
  • This role and team leverage expertise in product development, process engineering and initiative management to design and execute research in partnership within both Supply Chain & Marketing to drive Innovation, Quality, Cost and Sustainability initiatives based on short & long-term organizational needs

Role Responsibilities
  • Serve as deep internal technical expert for fermentation, distillation, maturation&/or formulated products with broad technical knowledge, particularly around Product Development and Process Scale-Up
  • Direct leadership of 3+ direct reports including technical mentoring, goal setting, coaching and personal development
  • Create, align, and lead a pipeline of technical research initiatives across Global Brand Houses to deliver against sustainability, quality and supply improvement goals
  • Lead Beam Suntory technical research roadmap & partnership with The University of Kentucky James B Beam Institute (JBBI)including working directly with the JBBI leadership on both the UK and BSI side.
  • Coach and mentor scientists and engineers, within & external to the ATR team, often leading team initiatives or highly complex experiments in this functional area
  • Initiate and/or lead large global and cross-functional projects pertaining to the exploration, improvement, development, or implementation of new or existing products and solutions
  • Develop and maintain a diverse and engaged team of technical experts at multiple levels of experience
  • Bring resilient, optimistic leadership for self and team to push through typical organizational red-tape and any resistance to novel or ground-breaking ideas that this role will need to drive
  • Ideate, create & sell-in business cases, in partnership with cross-functional team members, for research platforms across brands, liquids and locations to drive significant value to the business
  • Present & defend research pipeline at Executive Level meetings, enabled by partnership with Senior level leaders and their teams
  • Demonstrate a strong technical and business understanding of the competitive set, supplier base, adjacencies, and emerging technologies
  • Build and maintain strong relationships across the organization, cutting across functional boundaries - even in times of disagreement and debate
  • Proactively manages and handles workload and next steps for both self and team. Seeks out answers to questions to eliminate ambiguity and ensures progress is made in areas of both personal and team responsibility.
  • Communicates with manager and team members on a regular basis, with scheduled updates and recommendations for efficiency and effectiveness improvements across all of R&D. Communicates with other BSI and external personnel as needed, such as marketing, ingredient, and equipment suppliers, to facilitate work.

Qualifications & Experience
  • M.S or Ph.D. in Engineering, Scientific or related fields with specific distillation & fermentation experience a strong desire. Preferred with 8+ years' experience, or B.S. degree with 10+ years' experience.
  • Minimum 6 years work experience in food and/or beverage industry. Experience in research initiatives for spirits, beer, ready to drink alcoholic beverages or carbonated soft drinks a strong desire.
  • Demonstrated record of developing strong cross functional relationships within R&D as well as with Marketing, Supply Chain, Procurement, Engineering, etc. to drive strong collaboration and results.
  • Proficiency in creating, planning, and performing technical research in highly complex plants and environments
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including timely self-starting follow-up and commitment to deliverables, and openness to give and receive feedback for improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain a diverse, equitable and inclusive culture within Global R&D and broader Beam Suntory.
  • Ability to travel globally to partner in project work with internal and external clients, as well as support implementation at Beam Suntory facilities - travel approx. 10-30% with half local Kentucky operations and Chicago/NYC corporate offices, and balance other Beam Suntory locations. *As COVID restrictions allow.
  • Physically fit for work in lab, pilot plant and manufacturing environments, which includes long periods of standing, moving, and carrying or lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to taste limited quantities of alcoholic beverage samples in accordance with evaluation/research needs.
  • Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 & able to provide supporting documentation.
  • Ability to work in office at least ~60% of time, balancing work from home, as business needs require.
